The small fortress, Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta, sits opposite Morro Castle at the entrance to Havana Harbor. In addition to its guns guarding the harbor, La Punta was also the anchor point for a giant copper chain that extended to Morro Castle and was raised each evening at 9:00 pm to protect the harbor from attacking ships. The raising of the chain was accomanied by the firiing of a single canon at Morro Castle, a tradition which continues today.
